Beschrijving
Mace, the dried seed coat of the familiar nutmeg, is a sophisticated spice that adds subtle flavor and rich aromas to numerous dishes. When ripe, the fruit of the nutmeg tree splits open to reveal the precious nutmeg nut. The shell of this nut, the mace, is carefully removed by hand, flattened and then dried outside for 10 to 14 days. During the drying process, the mace's bright red color changes to beautiful amber, yellow or orange-brown hues.
Mace originated in Indonesia, where the nutmeg tree occurs naturally. Today, mace is also grown on some Caribbean islands, including Grenada. There, nutmeg is so important that it has even been given a place on the national flag, as a symbol of the country.
Culinary Uses of Mace
Our organic mace has a softer and finer flavor than the more familiar nutmeg. This makes mace a versatile spice that adds subtle, warm flavors to dishes. It is ideal for use in stews, soups and rice dishes, but it is also excellent in sweet creations such as puddings and desserts. Top chefs often choose organic mace for its softer flavor and the elegant nuances it adds to dishes. Mace is traditionally used whole during cooking, allowing it to slowly impart its flavor to the dish. After cooking, the mace is easily removed, leaving you with only the rich flavor, without the texture of the spice in the dish. Although mace is also available in powder form, we prefer the whole version. This guarantees the purity and freshness of the product, so you can always count on the best quality. Did You Know...?- Mace has long been the dominant flavoring in doughnuts and that it is widely used in cakes, cookies, and savory dishes, as is its close relative, nutmeg?
- Mace goes excellently with other spices such as allspice, cinnamon, cloves, cranberries, cumin, ginger, sugar and vanilla and tastes great in eggs, squash, jams, potatoes, sausage, veal and stuffings?
Sustainable packaging
Our herbs are packaged in resealable pouches that protect against light, air, and moisture, helping to preserve their aroma, quality, and properties as well as possible. The pouches are made of paper with a compostable protective layer and are industrially compostable. In many municipalities, they can be disposed of with organic waste. Home composting is also possible, although it may take a bit longer (about 1–2 years). More information about our packaging choice. Disclaimer
