What are our pouches made of?
Our herbs are packaged in resealable pouches that consist of:
- a paper outer layer
- a thin protective inner layer based on compostable materials
This protective layer is necessary to store the herbs properly. It helps to:
- block light
- limit air and moisture
- better protect aroma, flavor and active ingredients
Without such a barrier layer, herbs would lose their aroma faster and stay fresh for less time.
Why not completely paper pouches?
Completely paper packaging allows more air, moisture and light to pass through. For some products that's fine, but for many herbs it means that:
- aroma disappears faster
- flavor diminishes
- quality deteriorates more quickly
- shelf life becomes shorter
We therefore seek a balance between packaging that is as natural as possible and good protection of the contents. For us, it's important that the herbs you receive remain truly fresh and potent.
Compostable: what does that mean in practice?
Our pouches are industrially compostable. This means they can be broken down in professional composting facilities where temperature, moisture and microorganisms are optimally regulated. In many municipalities, compostable packaging is therefore allowed in organic waste. They are processed together with organic waste there. Since this can differ locally, we recommend checking how this is handled in your municipality.
Can you compost them at home too?
Yes, you can. In a home compost, the pouches will also break down, but the process takes longer because the conditions are less constant. On average, it takes about 1 to 2 years to break down. For some people, this is a nice solution, especially if you already have your own compost heap.
What if industrial composting is not possible?
Not every municipality processes compostable packaging in the same way. In some cases, they are not separately recognized or processed. That's why it's good to check locally what the best option is:
- Organic waste, if compostable packaging is allowed
- home composting, if you have that option
- or general waste, if other options are not possible
A conscious choice, not a perfect solution
We are aware that no packaging today is completely ideal. There is always a trade-off between:
- ecological impact
- product protection
- shelf life
- practical use
Our current pouches represent for us the best balance we can find today: they protect the herbs well, are resealable, and are made from materials that are industrially compostable. We continue to actively monitor this and are open to better alternatives, without compromising on quality.
