Benzoin resin is an aromatic resin obtained from trees of the genus Styrax, which grow in Southeast Asia. The resin forms amber-colored pieces with a warm, sweet and slightly vanilla-like fragrance.
Traditional uses
Benzoin has traditionally been used in fragrant incense blends and perfumes. Thanks to its soft and warm aroma, the resin has also often been incorporated into balms and ointments.
In perfumery, benzoin is known as a fixative resin, helping fragrances last longer while providing a smooth, rounded base to scent compositions.
How to use benzoin resin
Benzoin resin can easily be warmed in a sieve incense burner.
- Place a tea light in the burner and light it.
- Put a small piece of benzoin resin on the metal sieve.
- The resin will slowly melt and release a warm, sweet fragrance.
Benzoin is also often used in blends with other resins, such as frankincense or myrrh.
