Myrrh is one of the most iconic aromatic resins in history and comes from trees of the genus Commiphora. Like frankincense, the resin is obtained by making small incisions in the bark of the tree. The liquid resin then hardens into reddish-brown pieces with a deep, warm, slightly spicy, earthy and balsamic fragrance.
Traditional uses
Myrrh has been used for thousands of years in fragrant ointments, perfumes and incense blends. Historical sources also mention the resin in connection with traditional preparations for the care of the skin and mouth.
Its warm, earthy aroma also makes myrrh very suitable for aromatic incense blends that promote calm and a sense of inner stillness.
How to use myrrh resin
One of the simplest ways to use myrrh resin is with a sieve incense burner:
- Light a tea light in the burner.
- Place a small piece of myrrh resin on the metal sieve.
- The resin slowly warms and releases a warm, balsamic fragrance.
Myrrh also blends beautifully with other resins such as frankincense or benzoin.
