Description

Shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) is a plant native to Europe and Asia that has been valued in folk medicine for centuries. It grows in open areas, along roads, fields and fallow land, and is a true survivor. The little plant thrives in poor soils and thrives in temperate climates. The name “shepherd’s purse” comes from its heart-shaped seed pods, which resemble the pouches that shepherds used to carry. The little plant was a popular substitute for medicine during World War I because of its hemostatic properties. Shepherd’s purse is known for its beneficial effect on circulation. It is traditionally used to help stop light bleeding and supports a normal menstrual cycle. In addition, it is often used to support digestion.
