Galanga root (Alpinia galanga), also known as Lao ginger or Thai ginger, is a spice native to Southeast Asia and widely used especially in Thai, Indonesian and Malaysian cuisine. Although galanga is related to ginger, it has its own unique flavor: spicy, citrusy and slightly peppery. In addition to its culinary uses, galanga has been valued for centuries in traditional medicine, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
